You can choose to do as much or as little of this ritual as you would like. If all you do is read this post, that’s enough! Resist any pressure for your ritual to look a certain way. Do what resonates most with you or what works with where you are right now.
The Journaling with the Moon series honors the Tarot Card of 2025, the Hermit, and the secondary card of the year, the Moon, as well as the energies behind the current moon phase. These Soul Journaling Rituals are designed to bring you into deep self-reflection, connecting you with your Soul and helping you to channel its wisdom.
New Moon Eclipse in Virgo Themes
We welcome the New Moon Eclipse in Virgo on September 21 at 12:54 PM PT. This is our second Virgo New Moon of the season (the first was in August), so many of the same themes around Virgo are present—the need for organization, paying attention to details, and creating structures and routines are all at play with this New Moon, too.
The big difference between the two? This one carries the energy of a Solar Eclipse and therefore it has some powerful energy behind it that fuels new beginnings and growth. Two of my favorite sources for all things moon-related point to it being quite significant. Yasmin Boland in her 2025 Moonology Diary says eclipses are “like magical portals into a new life.” And Tanaaz of Forever Conscious says, “Solar eclipses represent entrance points into a new chapter of our destiny.”
Those might feel like some big promises, especially if you aren’t feeling anything is really happening (or worse, what’s happening feels frustrating). I have some thoughts on that that I’ll share after I run through the themes, but I just want to remind us all that sometimes simple steps that feel like nothing can lead to significant shifts.
The New Moon Eclipse in Virgo invites you to:
Clear the path for your new beginning. The energy around planning, organizing, and decluttering (physically and energetically) is quite strong again, and you may be revisiting or continuing what you started with the August New Moon in Virgo. If you’re feeling that energy, embrace it! Decluttering at this level is a quick win to get you that fresh start and to elevate your space and energy so you can step forward confidently.
Ground and get present in your body. Tap into the grounding Earth energy of Virgo and tend to your health and wellness (physically, mentally, and emotionally). Be honest about how you could take better care of yourself. Think of what you desire for your life and your future, then consider how that future version of you cares for themself. What are you doing for yourself on a regular basis, and how do you feel? You can start to care for yourself at that level now, to let yourself be open to feeling that way in the present. Don’t wait until you think you’ve earned it. Take the steps now to honor yourself. This alone could be the most potent and powerful change you could make under this New Moon Eclipse!
Consider the lessons you’ve learned recently and sit with the lessons life is bringing right now through the challenges we face individually and as a collective. There could be a lot of emotions and just general energy around these that needs to be released. Virgo rules over the digestive system, and I was particularly struck by Tanaaz of Forever Conscious and her suggestion to take time to “digest our emotions” and understand how we rid ourselves of the waste from these, rather than holding onto it. I personally think this all goes back to grounding and treating yourself with care, so you might want to circle back and pay extra attention to that previous bullet point!
This New Moon Eclipse could very well be an initiation into a new chapter for you. There could be a big event or change that moves you in a new direction or allows you to start something new. Or you might decide to step up, take the lead, and make a big change for yourself, letting this energy be the catalyst.
Don’t worry if it’s not clear to you yet how this all is impacting you. Regardless of what does or doesn’t happen under this New Moon Eclipse, consider this an open invitation to take the next step or start on a new path you’ve been dreaming about. You ultimately get to decide how to work with any energy coming your way, so stay focused on what you desire and what growth is needed to get you there.
And finally, if something you don’t like is happening right now, know that discomfort often leads to important lessons, which in turn create opportunities for growth and lasting, significant change.

The Message
The message in the image above, in case it does not appear for you:
“Seek greater clarity and meaning within the darkness. Listen to the call.
YOU are the light that ignites a new beginning.”
Soul Journaling Ritual for the New Moon Eclipse in Virgo
Before sitting down to journal, set up a nice, cozy space. In addition to your favorite journaling materials, you could light a candle, diffuse essential oils, set out your favorite crystals, and display the Tarot cards you might want to work with for this New Moon. You could also bring out an Oracle deck. Pick and choose any, all, or none! Do what feels right.
If you’re working with the Tarot, here’s what I suggest having nearby or on your altar this New Moon:
The Hermit (This is both the card for 2025 and for Virgo, so it’s presence is extra powerful this New Moon! It reminds us of the importance of going within and letting our inner wisdom guide us. Often that inner wisdom is more valuable than any external advice could be.)
The Moon (Secondary card for 2025, which reminds us of the importance of deep, honest reflection so we can see ourselves clearly. It also encourages us to listen to our intuition.)
Your Tarot card(s) of the year (If you don’t know what it is yet, discover it here.)
Once you’ve gathered the materials you’d like, settle in to do the Soul Journaling Session, which includes a visualization and a Soul Prompt. The prompt is written as a direct question to your Soul, and while we usually use the same prompt for every New Moon, because this is an eclipse, I’ve created one just for the New Moon Eclipse in Virgo. You can choose to journal a response to the question or even pull your own Tarot/Oracle card for the prompt and journal on that message.
The recording of me leading you through this is below, and if you prefer to follow along on your own with a written out version, you can access the script here (just note that the Soul Prompt is different since I did one just for the Eclipse this time, and that prompt is written below).
The question for your Soul on the New Moon is:
Soul, where can I no longer ignore the call for a fresh start?
Your New Moon Eclipse in Virgo Journal Prompts
If you’d like to go deeper, below are prompts specifically speaking to the themes of this first New Moon Eclipse in Virgo. You can do one or all of these.
Feel free to play sound healing or comforting music in the background while you journal. I’ve included a track created by my husband.
What clutter is blocking the path to the new beginning I desire? What do I wish to not carry with me, or what do I know for sure I don’t need anymore?
On the other side of this new beginning, how do I see myself remaining grounded and tending to my own needs? How can I apply this level of care to myself during the clutter-clearing process?
How can recent lessons I’ve learned or that I’m sorting through now inform this new beginning?
What do I most look forward to about the new beginning that is calling to me now, even if it is difficult? (If you aren’t yet clear on the new beginning, consider what you most look forward to in general about new beginnings, and how this energy can help you right now.)

Your timing for this was great, Marcy! I am excited to do some work with your second bullet point. I am so excited for this New Moon! I feel like someone promised me a trip to Disney on Sunday - it feels that big. My message from the last phase was to surrender to trust, and release perfectionism, control, and self-criticism. Leaning into my intuition & creativity, I feel I am ready for this next chapter. I have no idea what's coming, but I know I'm ready to receive. I appreciate your guidance❣️
I always happily await your journaling practices with the moon my dear 🌙 thanks 🙏🏻
