Introducing a New Series: Journaling with the Moon!
After sharing the Tarot Card of 2025 earlier this month, I felt journaling was the perfect way to honor this Year of the Hermit. And with the secondary card of the year being the Moon, how could I not create a journaling series around the Moon that encourages self-study and tapping into the soul’s wisdom?!
Full Moon in Cancer Themes
First, let’s do an overview of the themes we may see at play during this Full Moon in Cancer, occurring January 13 at 5:27 PM ET. You may find yourself called to examine:
Your closest relationships, their influence on you, and the balance (or lack thereof) within them—are you getting back what you put into them?
Your personal view of safety/security, comfort, and home
Family or generational patterns and influences that need to be released, particularly as it relates to your view of security and comfort
A general review of the past and what needs to be released—old stories, patterns, habits—and allowing forgiveness for anything we held onto for too long
(My source for many things Astrology and Moon related is the Seasons of the Zodiac: Love, Magick, and Manifestation Throughout the Astrological Year by Stephanie Campos.)
Create your own Soul Journaling Ritual for this Full Moon
Before sitting down to journal, set up a nice, cozy space. In addition to your favorite journaling materials, you could bring out any of the following:
A candle (to light when you begin the visualization below)
Your favorite crystals
Your favorite essential oils to diffuse
A favorite beverage
Your own Tarot deck, and you could bring out these cards if you’d like and place them on your altar or just nearby:
The Hermit (Card for 2025, which reminds us of the importance of going within and letting our inner wisdom guide us)
The Moon (Secondary card for 2025, which reminds us of the importance of deep, honest reflection so we can see ourselves clearly.)
The Chariot (The Major Arcana card associated with Cancer, which reminds us this Full Moon to pursue with dedication our own vision for comfort, security, and success.)
The Devil (The Major Arcana card associated with Capricorn, which reminds us not to get tempted off the path toward our goals or dreams by old self-sabotaging patterns or habits. You can read more about Capricorn & the Devil in my most recent post.)
An Oracle deck if you want to work with that at the end of your practice and pull your own card. You can also use your Tarot deck—do whatever feels right.
Once you’ve gathered the materials you’d like, settle in to do the visualization outlined below, designed to help you call in your higher self and soul wisdom. Feel free to play some sound healing and comforting music in the background while you meditate and journal. I’ve included a track below that my husband created, if you’re in need of one.
After taking a couple deep breaths to settle, follow the visualization below, and say silently to yourself or aloud the statements in italics.
Ground yourself.
Imagine there are roots growing from beneath you, traveling deep down and connecting you to the center of the Earth.
Thank you, Mother Earth, and the ancestors of this land on which I sit, for protecting and guiding me today. Thank you for helping me hear the wisdom of my Soul.
Connect to the Universe/Divine
Imagine now that there is a beautiful rose gold light flowing down like a waterfall from the sky/clouds/Universe (choose what resonates) above you.
Thank you, Spirit Team, for protecting and guiding me today. Thank you for helping me hear the wisdom of my Soul.
The light illuminates the crown of your head, activating your inner wisdom and connecting you to your Higher Self.
The light then travels to your third eye, activating your intuition.
The light settles in your heart space, connecting you to your soul.
Thank you, Higher Self and Soul for guiding me and allowing me to hear my intuition and inner wisdom today and all days.
Watch the light continue flowing down your whole body, washing away and releasing anything you do not need to bring with you into this practice.
Journal: Go Within for Self and Soul Inquiry
When you’re ready to step back from the visualization, grab your journaling materials, and find a comfortable position for journaling.
Remember, there’s no need to write in complete sentences—you could just write words as they come to you. There’s no need to even write! You could also doodle or draw, or simply sit and contemplate the questions. Choose what feels right to you in the moment.
Your Journal Prompts:
How has my family influenced my view of stability, security, and success?
How do the expectations of families or loved ones influence the goals or dreams I pursue and how I pursue them?
What expectations do I have for myself when it comes to creating comfort and security, both in my personal life and in my career?
Removing any expectations or outside influences, how does my soul or higher self view stability and success?
What does my soul and higher self want me to release in this cycle in regards to stability, success, and the pursuit of my dreams?
Pull a Card
And finally, if you like to work with Tarot and/or Oracle cards, feel free to pull a card for extra insight.
To call in guidance as you draw your card, you could envision that rose gold light again flowing over you, and ask silently or aloud:
Higher Self, Soul, and Spirit Team: What do I need to know that serves my greatest and highest good and serves the greatest and highest good of all involved?
Get a Personalized Journal Prompt: Share Your Insights!
While this is a solo practice, sometimes it’s nice (and validating) to share what came through for us with others, so we can receive support and learn from one another. If you feel called, I invite you to head into the comments and share:
What you’re releasing this Full Moon
And/or the card you pulled for yourself
I’m happy to provide encouragement and additional perspective, as well as a bonus journal prompt just for you, based on your insights from this experience.
Did you enjoy this ritual, and want more like it? Please let me know by liking this post, leaving a comment, or sharing it so I know to keep creating them.
One last note for anyone wanting to go deeper on the Hermit card and its energy:
, who is creating a Tarot deck of her own, recently wrote an insightful and thorough post on The Hermit that I highly recommend reading:With much love and gratitude,
Marcy
Thank you so much for this Marcy. I spent a long time with this ritual tonight and felt such deep peace and strong connection. It was magical. And your husband’s music was the perfect companion. Blessed first full moon. ❄️💫
Marcy, thank-you so much for the recommendation. You made my morning.
