The endings that change us
Journal prompts to tap into the energy of Scorpio & the Death Tarot card
My newest meditative journaling audio course series centered on Astrology and the Tarot continues this month with Scorpio & the Death card, and it serves as a reminder that beauty and great transformation can come from endings and losses.
Each Astrological sign is linked with a Tarot card in the Major Arcana. Their themes and messages reinforce each other, helping us to work more intentionally with the energy of each sign and season. Scorpio’s card is the Death card, which is also the 13th card in the Major Arcana—a number that is very fitting for a card that carries such a negative connotation, to the point that many modern decks have renamed the card to something a little more friendly. Regardless of what you choose to call it, the themes and essence of this card remain.
The Death cards featured here are from the following decks: The Light Seer’s Tarot by Chris-Anne, The Cozy Witch Tarot by Amanda Lovelace, The Journey Tarot by Cassie Uhl, The Angel Tarot by Radleigh Valentine, and The Meraki Tarot by Bouchette Design. They all show some type of surrendering and release, with light coming in, crossing a threshold into something more peaceful and beautiful on the other side.
Scorpio & Death Themes
Both Scorpio and the Death card can be intense, but they are not to be feared or avoided, despite their reputations and the misconceptions that come with them.
Both carry the themes of rebirth and transformation as the result of endings, losses, and release. The death or ending of something is a natural part of the cycle, and only when we let go can we make room for the new. There can be so much beauty in the transformation, in the rebirth—this is when we come to realize our own strength.
My Experience
The example I can think of in my own life is motherhood. When I became a mother, I had to let go of a previous version of myself. I didn’t lose the essence of who I am, but my priorities underwent a major shift, and my values changed significantly. There is no going back to how I operated before and not just because my circumstances changed, but because I no longer view the world in the same way.
I was reborn as the version of myself that is a mother, and while it has been hard and I’ve missed the “freedom” my former self once had (or at least what I thought was freedom), there has been so much beauty in this transformation. In many ways, I am more myself than ever before. I had to strip away all the things that I thought I needed and should value, and instead turn my focus to what I really do value.
The push I needed for transformation happened to be when I became a mother, but I believe it would have happened another way even if I hadn’t had children. This just expedited it. Everyone has events or moments like these that change them, and yours will be unique to you.
Below are some prompts to help you dive deeper into the Death card.
