Could you simplify that?
Your Journal Prompts This Week:
What are some simple, small acts I enjoy doing? Why are these experiences enjoyable?
What connotations or preconceived notions might I have about the words simple, simplicity, or simplify?
Where in my life could I benefit from simplicity?
Ever notice that it's a lot harder to take things away than it is to add things on?
I think about this a lot with writing specifically, but I'm sure it applies to many other creative (and even non-creative) endeavors. A good example is when you're asked to write your bio. That's hard enough to do in a couple paragraphs, but then try to do it with a character limit on your Instagram profile. Somehow it takes 2x the amount of time to write than your typical bio!
When you think about it, we were all trained to look for the fancy add-ons from an early age. In school, you wouldn't get the A+ if you just did the minimum required. The teacher would tell you that you had to go above and beyond...
And if you're someone like me who felt the need to get that A+, that's where your need to overthink every project and add on all the things began. How will I ever stand out if I just do the bare minimum?!
This kind of thinking has led me to spin ideas around but never actually start, begin a project but never end up sharing it, and make plans that end up being more stressful than enjoyable. If this sounds familiar, you might be like me and need some time to explore more opportunities to simplify your plans, projects, or goals.
One way I am doing this is by trying to focus on the next simple step I can take toward something I want to create or cultivate. If you have a big idea right now, or something you're working toward, just keep asking yourself, what is the next simple step I can take?
As always, feel free to share with me any insights from your journaling!
With much love & gratitude,
Marcy
