What scares you? đ±
The Inner Haunted House
What is something I want to do that scares me?
How do I know it scares me? What thoughts run through my head, and how do I feel in my body?
What can I gain from moving past this fear? What waits for me on the other side?
It's spooky season and Halloween is almost here! As much as I like cutesy Halloween decorations and shopping for them at Target, I definitely don't enjoy being scared. I was the kid who had to have her mom sneak her out of a side exit at a haunted house. And even as an adult, I can see my own tendency to seek a side exit when things get a little scary. Maybe if fear doesn't see me, I can just walk around it . . .Â
Your responses to fear might be a little different than mine, but we all face fear at some point, and there's a good chance you feel it somewhere in your life right now. I encourage you to think of something you want to do that scares you, and examine what comes up around it. Perhaps you do a little exercise and imagine any fearful thoughts, anxiety, negative self-talk, or doubts that pop up as a cast of spooky characters in an inner haunted house. What can you do to build your courage to confront and move past these ghosts?
I sometimes like to picture my anxiety as a squiggly, angry cartoon monster, and when I really look at it, it's more amusing and silly than it is scary, kind of like a child that is acting out. This is similar to what my mom would tell me about going into haunted houses--it's all paint and makeup and costumes and people pretending to be scary.
When we see our fear for what it is, when we recognize we are scared, I think we've taken our first steps in conquering it. And when we can remind ourselves of what we could gain from moving past this fear, it becomes a little easier to conquer that haunted house--no help from mom needed!Â
Join Me for a NEW Series on Sundays in November & December!
The holiday season is often considered a magical one, and you might already be seeing social media posts and marketing messages that highlight âthe magic of the season.â While it can indeed be magical in its own way, itâs easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of this time of year, forgetting to go within and care for YOUâto acknowledge the season youâre in right now. Even if your season doesnât perfectly match the one happening outside, it has its own magic that should be honored.
