Turn on your magic 🪄
Yes, You Have Magic
What does the word "magic" mean to me?
Where can I see magic inside of me or within my life?
How is what I create magical?
Or, how does my magic show up in my creations?
Magic. It's definitely a word we hear at this time of year, as we approach Halloween and the winter holidays, often considered a magical season. But do you ever consider it outside of this time of year, outside of fairy tales and children's stories or movies?
I've spent a lot of time thinking about magic lately. When I came up with my Instagram handle, @themysticalfarrey, I was trying to play with my maiden name, pronounced "fairy," because, why not?! And as I was writing copy for my website, I ended up writing about how storytelling is my particular "magic."
I think of a particular story from my life whenever I write about this. When I was studying broadcast journalism in undergrad, they sent all of us away for one quarter of our junior year to live in a small city so we could work as real TV reporters. I was assigned to a small station in Clarksburg, WV.Â
One of my first times with a bigger, lead story, I was editing my video up until the last possible second, scrambling to get myself presentable in front of the newsroom camera for the 5 PM newscast. In what felt like a flash, I was live, and my full news package that I'd spent all day filming, writing, and editing, aired--and it was over.
I turned to the staff in the newsroom and said something to the effect of, "All of that running around, and now I'm suddenly done? I don't even know how I pulled that off!" And one of the cameramen said, "Yep, that's the magic of television!"
Me in my TV News days!
(This one was a few years later, in Lincoln, NE.)
While that was a higher stress situation, what I was able to accomplish in such a short amount of time did amaze me, and that memory stuck with me well beyond my time in TV News. I would see these magic moments come again, and by that I mean I would again witness my own ability to use my innate gifts and qualities to create something out of nothing, in all sorts of circumstances. I was using my magic, my ability to weave a story together in my own unique way, in that newsroom. And while TV News was ultimately not the best expression of my magic, it didn't mean there wasn't magic there to continue working with. And that magic helped make me a good reporter, even if it was for a short period of time!
We often forget about that magic within. We get wrapped up in our daily routines and see our magic as an ordinary part of life, sometimes taking it for granted. We forget to recognize it, work with it, and nurture it. I hope you can use the above journal prompts to explore what that magic is within you and how it expresses itself. And it's OK if you aren't expressing it in the best possible way right now. Once you to start to see it, the possibilities and opportunities begin to appear--like magic!
