Let it go, Let it go!
Release Your Grip
Where in my life might I be holding on too tight (to a thought, pattern, belief, situation)? How does that feel?
What's the story behind my need to hold on?
How can I begin to gently release my grip and redirect my focus?
Sorry to anyone who might have cringed a little at the subject line to this email! But there's a reason more than just children are obsessed with that song. We all want to feel free, to "let it go." A world where we can release whatever is weighing us down or keeping us from fully expressing who we are sounds wonderful. And we're all left wondering how we can get to this magical place.
Letting go is so much harder than it sounds. But as with anything we care about it, it starts with a slow, steady, and consistent practice.
It starts with recognizing those beliefs or situations that keep us stagnant. Then we examine the story behind them--how did they get here, why do we hold on, why are they sticking to us like gum on the bottom of our shoe?
Sometimes it is a story we told ourselves based on earlier experiences. Sometimes someone else told us the story, and it mistakenly became a part of us. Sometimes it is a little bit of both. And once we've uncovered this, we take tiny steps every day to release it. We keep going even when we feel like there's barely any movement. Even when it feels unpleasant.
I've been working through this myself with starting both a freelance communications and yoga business. I spend time obsessing over the one client who chose not to work with me, over the one person who unsubscribed or unfollowed me. It comes from a place deep down that feels unworthy or not good enough, and it also comes from stories outside of me that say a good business owner should know what their clients need, and if they are turning away, there's something wrong that needs to be fixed. (Nevermind all the existing happy clients, followers, and subscribers.)
When I stop the runaway train of thoughts and identify what's causing me to obsess about this, I can start to make subtle shifts. I start to redirect my focus to what is working, to what I do enjoy, to what I know to be true. Gradually (and I do mean gradually), I've started to shorten that time spent obsessing, controlling, or forcing. I've started to let go of the need to be perfect, of the need to please, of the need to seek validation outside of myself.
I encourage you to explore what you might be holding on to. Feel free to hit reply on this email and tell me what you're letting go of, cause we could all use a good accountability partner and cheerleader!
