Advice: Take in moderation
Seeking Advice
Are you someone who seeks advice and help often, or do you tend to avoid it? Maybe in certain situations or areas of your life, it's different: for example, for relationship advice, you might keep to yourself, but for career advice, you might look outward. Explore your relationship with advice with these journal prompts:
How often do you seek advice outside of yourself and why?
What do you hope to receive from another person's advice?
How/when do you know a piece of advice is right or wrong for you?
How can you strike a balance between listening to your own voice and the voices of others?
If you saw my reel about the confused entrepreneur on Instagram last week, you might know I have been taking in lots of business advice because I'm just starting out. And while many times it has been super helpful, there are also times when it has led to more confusion and inaction, and I end up second guessing my own instincts or interests.
But last week I took a big step and started formal mentorship sessions with the yoga teacher I first took a Yoga & Journaling class from. I admire her work so much, and I was so scared to get her input. Not just because she might think I stink as a teacher, but also because I feared that outside input would somehow cause me to lose my voice and instincts.
When I sat in meditation and journaled about this, I was brought back to high school, when I was training for the Speech Team for radio/news speaking. I was told my voice was too high for radio, but then I auditioned for it senior year on a whim, and it turned out I was good. That is, I was good until I started weekly sessions with the Speech Team coach. Much like with the business advice, I got too much in my head, overanalyzing how I spoke every word. I went from collecting medals to not even making a final round.
But in my journaling I realized something very important: When I was being coached for Speech Team, I was being coached to win. When I'm getting business advice, I'm often being coached on how to make a profit. But with my yoga mentor, she made it clear from our first session that I'm being coached to serve. And when I look at all the mentors and guides I've had or currently have that do inspire me to keep going, it's because they focus on helping me step into service. (A few of you are on this email list, you know who you are!)
This is why I asked the second journaling question above...what do you hope to receive from someone's advice? That may be the key to discerning which advice to listen to. In my case, with business/career advice, I will ask, "Does this help me serve others?" If the answer is no, it's time to move on.
Coming Up . . .
The Sacred Journaling Circle is this Friday, August 6 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET! In this circle, we will do journal prompts and a guided meditation together to prepare for the peak of the Lionsgate Portal. I've already pulled some cards for us, and it's crazy how much they align with the Lionsgate themes!
Join Me for the In Process Summer Series!
I'm excited to be joining podcaster and writer Katie Dalebout's Summer Series of In Process, formerly known as the Creative Underdogs. I've been a part of this program since it started last year, and it honors all the steps we move through when bringing our ideas to life or moving through a life transition.
Her summer series is FREE and I'll be a guest teacher for Week 2, with the theme of Gather. My Yoga & Journaling class on Thursday, August 12 at 12 PM PT will focus on the process of gathering and nurturing our ideas.
I encourage you to join all of the sessions, as there are three other wonderful guest teachers for the other themes! (Hi, Naya! Can't wait for your dance session on week 3!)
